Facebook becomes planning ground of teenager's murder

A 15-year-old schoolboy in Britain was killed in a merciless attack with samurai swords and machetes that was apparently planned on social networking website Facebook.

Sofyen Belamouadden was hunted down by an armed group of 20 teenagers before being stabbed nine times during rush hour at Victoria station, jurors at the Old Bailey court were told.

Witnesses saw youths with weapons including a samurai sword with a blade 20-30 cm long, a flick knife and a Swiss Army knife, and machetes and screwdrivers.

Sofyen was killed after tensions arose between pupils from two London schools.

The attack was in revenge for a skirmish at Victoria the previous day when a boy from a rival school had been left with a bloody nose, the Daily Mail reported.

During Facebook chats that evening, some of Sofyen's alleged killers discussed what was to happen the following day, and how to get weapons, the jurors were told.

Prosecutor Mark Heywood said the attack took place in broad daylight in front of hundreds of commuters. On the day of the attack in March last year, two of the accused left school at lunchtime to buy a block of knives.

Samuel Roberts from Camberwell, Obi Nwokeh from Bermondsey, Enoch Amoah from Camberwell, and Victoria Osoteku from Deptford, all aged 18, have each denied charges of murder.

They also pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm.

Details of the trial were published for the first time Wednesday after reporting restrictions were lifted.

Sofyen was "given no chance of life", said Heywood. "So brazen and confident were his killers that they openly carried the various weapons that they used with them as they ran towards him and together hunted him down."

"Such was their arrogance that they carried out that kind of attack in the heart of the capital city, in a public place, a terminus station at the height of the rush hour, and in sight of scores if not hundreds of people passing by, people going to their own homes." he said.

"They were so heavily armed that no other individual or smaller group or even police officer or member of station staff could withstand them or stop them," he added.

The victim and his friends were "hopelessly outnumbered".

"They had already lost the arms race and it was obvious that they had seriously underestimated what they were likely to meet at Victoria that afternoon. They did not expect the kind of weapons and they almost certainly did not expect the level of ferocity," the prosecutor said.

Mobile app industry to touch $15 Billion in 2011

The mobile applications industry will be ruled by Apple and Android mobile operating systems in the coming years and the mobile application store sale is expected to hit $15 billion in 2011, a new Gartner study reveals. The dramatic rise in sales is mainly due to the popularity of iPad and other tablet computers.

The total revenue made from mobile application downloads in 2010 was about $5.2 billion. The research firm predicts that the trend will continue to rise and in the next three years, the mobile app industry revenue will touch $58 billion.

Gartner's Research Director Stephanie Baghdassarian said in a statement that the mobile application industry is not just a fad. She opined that "Many are wondering if the app frenzy we have been witnessing is just a fashion, and, like many others, it shall pass. We do not think so."

Apple and other prominent app stores together collected 30 percent of the retail price of all apps sold, with 70 percent going to the software developers.

According to the study, the consumers will download 17.7 billion applications this year, more than doubling from the 8.2 billion downloads in 2010. It also predicts that free downloads will account for 81 percent of total mobile-application-store downloads in 2011.

Apple unveils iTunes 10.1.2 update

Apple has released a maintenance and stability update for iTunes - media-playing, iOS-device-syncing and app-shopping tool. The company's press release says "iTunes 10.1.2 provides a number of important stability and performance improvements."

iTunes 10.1.2 delivers certain improvements and support for the soon-to-be-released CDMA-based Verizon iPhone. The debut date for CDMA iPhone on Verizon is on February 10.
The update's "Read Before You Install iTunes" document can only be seen if you download the new version from Apple's iTunes site and not when downloading through software update. The update requires Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard or later.

The new software is currently available via Software Update and the company's download website in distributions for both Mac OS X 10.5 and later and 64-bit versions of Windows Visa and Windows 7.

Top 5 mobile trends for 2011

Today we are on the verge of a time when app-capable non-PC devices will out ship PCs. The mobile sector will be the main growth driver, with mobile voice revenue advancing at a 8.1 percent CAGR in India during the 2010-15 period (in contrast to 2.7 percent for Asia-Pacific as a whole) and mobile data service revenue growing at a 27.3 percent CAGR during the same period. What ruling the picture today are mobile phone and its close cousin, mobile apps. Technologies like 4G and LTE, Near Field Communication (NFC) will witness increasing amount of hype in 2011, and as a result of it, the use of mobile/social/location combinations will soar. Adding to it, recent industry reports from InMobi and Synovate have revealed that consumers are showing a greater inclination towards receiving mobile advertising and marketing messages. So what are the fresh mobile trends that the coming year has in its store for us? Here are the five that topped our list.

1. More personalized mobile marketing:

Thanks to the popular portable smart devices and advances in wireless technologies, mobile marketing is increasing quickly. Short message is regarded as one of the most efficient modes of mobile marketing. While mobile advertising boosts communication with consumers, the messages without a required permission from users cause privacy violations. But the adoption of more translucent and permission-based marketing will increase the credibility of mobile as an effective marketing tool.
2. Mobiles will turn into "electronic wallets" replacing credit cards:

The day is not too far when you'll be purchasing your goods using your phone as a credit card. Mobile micropayments will soon make us pay from mobile-turn-electronic wallets. One of the key advantages of mobile payment is that it will make the transaction much quicker and secure than the credit card readers or any written form. Recently, Google made an announcement that in its next release of Android 2.3 or "Gingerbread", there will be support for NFC (Near Field Communication) technology. Nokia's C7 handset also has an NFC chip included, which will be activated in 2011. Adding to it, Apple?s next iPhone is also likely to come with NFC. NFC is a short-range high frequency wireless communication technology which enables the exchange of data between devices over about a 10 centimeters distance.

3. Apps vs. HTML5, the war will go on:

According to Forrester, it's not a question of "either/or" when it comes to a choice between apps vs. the mobile Web, but both. While for regular users of services like banking and brokerage apps will be on demand, the Internet will remain the retreat for more occasional information and needs. However, despite great opportunities offered by the new HTML, apps and app stores continue to rule mobile content, as the availability of basic functions of an app even without a stable data connection makes it more appealing for customers.
4. Mobiles will join the 3D bandwagon:

Being integrated in almost any device, 3D technology is the talk of the town today. As of now, a few mobile manufacturers have started experimenting with 3D technology, but they still have to go a bit further to create a sophisticated 3D mobile device. This year, the market is likely to see more such experimentation. In India, Spice Mobility has already introduced a phone with 3D capabilities. LG has also tossed its hat into the ring. It showcased its 3D mobile concept at CES 2011.

5. The concept of Green Mobiles will get momentum:

In a bid to appeal to the environmentally conscious consumers, some mobile vendors are developing handsets that are eco-friendly. Following its "GreenHeart" mantra, Sony Ericsson has made Sony Ericsson Elm, a handset made from recycled plastics and free of hazardous chemicals. It comes with a low power consumption charger, reduced packaging and some eco-aware apps. Another interesting fact is that it comes with an e-manual on the phone instead of a printed guide. We have other mobiles like LG's GD510 that comes with the facility of solar charging. Given this move, we expect other vendors to go down a similar route.

Hyper-fast quantum computers could be reality soon

Hyper-fast quantum computers have edged a step closer to reality after scientists generated 10 billion quantum bits in silicon for the first time.

The achievement in silicon, the basis of the computer chip, has important implications for integration with existing technology, according to a team of researchers.
The scientists from Britain, Japan, Canada and Germany believe that such computers, based on quantum bits or qubits, will be able to test many possible solutions to a problem at once, the journal Nature reports.

Conventional computers based on binary 'switches', or bits, can only do one thing at a time, according to the Daily Mail.

"Creating 10 billion entangled pairs in silicon with high fidelity is an important step forward for us," said John Morton of Oxford University.

"We now need to deal with the challenge of coupling these pairs together to build a scalable quantum computer in silicon," said Morton, who led the study.

Quantum entanglement involves the notion that particles can be connected in such a way that changing the state of one instantly affects the other, even when they are miles apart.

Albert Einstein once famously described it as "spooky action at a distance". Other areas of quantum-related research include ultra-precise measurement and improved imaging.

Google, Mozilla step up privacy feature in browsers

Giving importance to online privacy are Google and Mozilla who have initiated a new feature in their browsers, Chrome and Firefox, which lets users to choose if online advertisers can track their activities online or not.Mozilla has formally announced that future Firefox versions will come with a built-in do-not-track feature. On the other hand, an extension called Keep My Opt-Outs has been released by Google for its Chrome browser. Through this, the users can permanently opt out their Chrome browser out of online ad personalization via cookies.
The step by Google and Mozilla is seen as aligning to the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) proposal on 'Do Not Call' list for online advertising. Thought the FTC did not pass any legislation on the same, it left it on the browser makers to self regulate the advertisers.

New phone app to identify potential paedophiles

Scientists have developed a new phone application to identify potential paedophiles. The software, called Child Defence, enables kids to scan webchat on their mobile phones to verify the age of people they are messaging.

Designed by Isis Forensics based in Lancaster University, the software uses the latest advances in technology to identify language quirks peculiar to different age groups, a Daily Mail report said.

It can also link in with websites such as Facebook and Twitter, allowing children to scan chat text from their site.

Although there are other child protection softwares in the market, Child Defence is said to be the first software children can use themselves.

But the charity National Society for Prevention of Cruetly to Children (NSPCC) said the application does not offer total protection from online paedophiles and warned parents not to be complacent.

Chris Cloke, head of child protection at NSPCC, said: "It can lull us into thinking that the child is safe and therefore we can move onto something else.

"I would certainly say that measures of this sort can be helpful but they need to be seen as one of the wider armoury we have for tackling child sexual abuse."

Last year paedophile Peter Chapman, 33, was jailed for a minimum of 35 years for the murder of 17-year-old Ashleigh Young in County Durham.

He posed as a teenager, sending her a picture of a bare-chested handsome man instead of one of himself.

He then picked her up in a car and raped and killed her before dumping her body close to the Little Chef on the outskirts of Sedgefield.

Paedophiles are known to abuse social networks, assuming different identities to target vulnerable children and groom them for abuse.
